Community Service
Lignum Vitae Ltd., a small local business, is committed to social responsibility and positive community service. Jim and his team are long-time supporters of City Slicker Farms, a nonprofit organization that helps the West Oakland community build urban gardens and provide affordable fresh produce. Jim and his team have provided expertise and labor to build pro-bono planter boxes that are used throughout the neighborhood. www.cityslickerfarms.org Growing a garden is one of Jim’s passions.
Jim was captain of the Rebuilding Together team and recruited his shop as crew for managing various remodeling projects. They were responsible for extensive remodeling and refurbishment at the Berkeley Men’s Shelter.
Jim also contributes his time to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Crew, supporting his wife, Jan (a two-time survivor) and her Walk Team.
At Lee Mathson Middle School in East San Jose where his daughter, Anna, teaches, Jim and his team built three bookcases for the library. Jim organized and led a team of 30 volunteer students, parents and staff to create planter boxes for over 50 trees on the school’s property.
